The last time I posted on this page was way back in April and far away in Tucson; but if the place was different today — Westport, Connecticut —the subject was the same: a protest against President Trump and his administration. Today’s theme was “No Kings,” a reference to Trump’s increasingly autocratic governance, the centralizing of political power in the executive, and even illegal or questionable actions, such as deploying military assets to tasks that ought to be handled by law enforcement.
In other words, we might as well refer to him not as President Trump but as HRH Donald the First. An exaggeration, but not that much of one.
No Kings rallies were held all over the country on Oct. 18, The one Leslie and I attended looked to have drawn around 3,000 people. They stood two or three deep on the bridge spanning the Saugatuck River, Everyone was on best behavior, no rocks or firebombs in evidence, and the chants sometimes echoed those from the 60s (Hey, hey, ho, ho, Donald Trump has got to go). Signs were carried of course, some flat and matter of fact, some with clever slogans (Put the Wannabe on his Throne and Flush; (I Like My Democracy neat — no ICE).
How much this sort of thing will accomplish, if it accomplishes anything, is anyone’s guess. It does show that there’s some life left in the body politic, as opposed to the neutered or totally dead legislators who represent them. This country will celebrate its 250th birthday next July 4, making it ( I think) the longest-lived democracy in history. But that democracy is now in trouble, serious trouble; we have turned our political lives and fate over to a would be demagogue. Let’s take them back.

Phil,
I have just read an article from the Wall Street journal, on the deployment of the carrier USS Gerald Ford. They deployed in June. They have been told to expect an 11 month deployment being extended by world events. As a former Marine Officer myself, one can understand deployment extensions as part of the job and part of the oath, however we have listened to congress and Presidents for years state the troops come first only to abuse their service. We don’t have the manpower or force structure to support our commitments. The deployment schedule we subjected our armed forces to during the war on terror was unconscionable and immoral as a nation. I mean really, 30 or 60 or even 90 day extensions are understandable, painful but understandable but 150. I implore those with a voice to be heard to search out this article and read it and kudos to WSJ for reporting this. Phil this is why our democracy is in trouble, the people who volunteer to serve this democracy, we abuse.
It feels invigorating to be among so many like minded people!
How do you spell fascism? ….MAGA…
Thanks, dude, for, as always, having your ass in the grass. Lavada and I went. My sign said “Liberty not liars”; Lavada’s said something less pithy. We’re south Georgia, so we had maybe two hundred, a Saturday in Brunswick and few if any Visigoths to antagonize. It was hot and the speeches were too long, but we paraded down Gloucester Street to the Labor Department (didn’t know there was one). Got see the other progressives. I told one person I’d known from the street, “We never had a political conversation, and now we don’t need one.” It’s nice to hear from you any day about any thing.
Philip,
Excellent article………..so far in DC it has been a great rally with no trouble.
I would suggest that calling Trump a “King” is an insult to real Kings in the world, good or bad.
Rather, he should be called what he really is, a wannabe “Mafia Don”, but he and his wannabe Capos (Bessent, Carr, Miller, etc.) give the Mafia a bad name. So, we are left with a wannabe “Dictator”, which is more fitting, especally since he is so envious of his handler (Putin) and is in awe of the dictator in Hungary, KIm in North Korea, etc. Next demonstration should be “No Dictators”.
Good dissent, however when referring to the USA as perhaps the longest standing democracy is misleading due to the lack of qualifiers before the word democracy. It has been called many things; perhaps boondoggle is equally representative. I know, I know, things could change, which is why you made this post in the first place.
